Asylum – Women’s Issues
Asylum is also available to members of the gay community and to women in specific claims unique to women alone.
Women’s Asylum Claims:
- FGM (Forced Genital Mutilation)
- Domestic Violence
- Forced Marriage
- Forced Adherence to Traditional Customs and Beliefs Oppressive to Women
Requirements under Asylum Law
- Applicant is specifically threatened or actually harmed for opposition to the above;
- No assistance available or offered by authorities/police/government;
- Lack of family support for applicant;
- Applicant’s opposition causes problems for family/extended family/casts dishonor on family.
- Applicant unable to move away to different city/region to avoid harm;
- Applicant leaves for her country because she fear for her physical safety.
