Asylum – Women’s Issues

Asylum is also available to members of the gay community and to women in specific claims unique to women alone.

Women’s Asylum Claims:

  1. FGM (Forced Genital Mutilation)
  2. Domestic Violence
  3. Forced Marriage
  4. Forced Adherence to Traditional Customs and Beliefs Oppressive to Women

Requirements under Asylum Law

  1. Applicant is specifically threatened or actually harmed for opposition to the above;
  2. No assistance available or offered by authorities/police/government;
  3. Lack of family support for applicant;
  4. Applicant’s opposition causes problems for family/extended family/casts dishonor on family.
  5. Applicant unable to move away to different city/region to avoid harm;
  6. Applicant leaves for her country because she fear for her physical safety.
